“There is a tendency to make everything into a competition. Art doesn’t need that.” ~ James Taylor
Stressed? In an unhappy place in your life? Going through a hard time? I get it. Heck, we all get it. There is no life lived without being tested, challenged, or having endured heartache — not one. We all try to overcome struggle, and we all have different ways of coping and walking our personal journeys.
I find creative and artful activities are extremely helpful in renewing our inner selves and feeding our souls. Whatever the outlet, it is different for each person. It helps you to become lost within yourself. If you can express yourself in a nondestructive manner and do something that truly brings you joy and happiness, then I believe you can raise above anything life throws your way.
Art is an outer manifestation of an inner expression. Creativity is as individual as speech. For some it’s drawing, for others it may be painting, photography, origami, scrapbooking, crafts, decorating, fashion design, constructing model cars, making furniture, gardening, bonsai, music, poetry, dance, singing, and/or whatever your passion. I find on a sunny day planting a tree, tending to my roses or deadheading flowers or weeding can be hard work, but rewarding. I am usually thinking of nothing else when in the garden surrounded by nature. On rainy days, there’s always writing and creating this blog or formatting and scrapbooking photos. My granddaughter loves to draw in different mediums (one of her sketches is at the top of this article), my son plays his guitar, my sister beautifully landscapes her yard, etc. There is no right or wrong when you’re creating something. It’s not a competition.
Everyone should have something creative. Not just collecting things, or reading someone else’s work, or sitting in someone else’s garden, or enjoying someone else’s creative work. I’m certainly not taking anything away from those wonderful activities because they need to be appreciated in the highest form and may bring you enjoyment, peace, and comfort as well. I’m focusing on the pursuit of creating something uniquely positive unto yourself. Digging within to find what sets you apart from everyone else. There is nothing more satisfying than that. Nothing… Sandy
