Legal assault in sports. Hit him hard, wing the ball at their head, take ’em out, bash them with a hockey stick. Why do we allow what would normally end in assault charges, jail time, and fines outside the stadium and most certainly does for the fans in the stands result in nothing happening to the perpetrator. The common think is they know what they signed up for going into this and it’s just part of the game. Well, they knew they signed up to play a sport for hopefully a good sum of money, but should that include criminal assault? It’s just accepted that the broken arm, snapped neck, twisted ankle, hockey stick to the face, etc. is just the cost of doing business in the bigs. Why do we allow that? Why?
Careers, lives, livelihood, can go up in smoke with one late hit in a football game. They carried him off the field on a stretcher and are transporting him to the hospital for treatment and an MRI. Gee, I hope the detectives will be there to meet them and get witness statements. After all there were tens of thousands of witnesses. Surely there’s enough evidence to press charges. The tape of the incident has been played on every channel dozens of time. There’s no disputing that 325 lb guy just torpedoed into that 215 lb quarterback. He didn’t even know it was coming. That’s a shame, we really hate to see that happen. Let’s clap for the man who’s down. I think I’ll go get one of those giant pretzels and a Coke while there’s a lull in the action. Okay, I’m back. There was a long line at the concessions. Looks like everybody else had the same idea. Did I miss anything? A touchdown pass? Oh, Maaannn! Not a word about the poor guy in a neck brace being slowly passed into the MRI machine at the hospital a few miles away. I heard he was hurt pretty badly and may be out the rest of the year. How will our team win now with him being on the disabled list. The rest of the season is doomed. Doomed I tell ya. Let’s turn on ESPN and see what they say our chances will be now.
The season is ruined?!? How about the severely injured player. The penalty was 15 yards. I mean what else do you want? Umm, an arrest, charges filed, at least a fine and community service. Why do we allow our fellow citizens to be brutally assaulted in the name of the game. Why? The first time you see a hockey player file charges against another player for beating them with a stick or a baseball player for a pitcher intentionally throwing a 90-mile an hour baseball at his head, or a basketball player elbowing someone in the eye and throwing them to the ground, there will be a big big change in professional sports. There will be meetings, conferences, wide-spread coverage on all the TV and radio talk shows, newspaper articles, documentaries, movies, etc. There will be press conferences about what they plan to do about the violence, etc. They have these types of discussions now except nobody will in the act of playing a game is in danger of jail time.
Just as a player is not allowed to use steroids to enhance their chances of winning, they shouldn’t be sanctioned to use ruthlessness and assault either. Accidents happen, sure, but deliberate acts should be held a to a different standard than simply a time-out in a box, a yard penalty, a bench-clearing brawl, being thrown out of the game, or having to pay a couple thousand dollars to the league. The fans like it is the frequent comeback. Well, there was a time when people used to go watch people being sacrificed to lions too, but that’s no longer legally allowed as are cock and dog fighting. Leave the ego and brutality at the door. It’s time to start acting like professional sportsmen and not thugs. I couldn’t imagine going to work and having someone throw a stapler at my head or pushing me down the escalator and get away with it. Sports for Life… Sandy
