Our whole world communicates with initials. Starting with the oldies but goody government acronyms Such as FBI, CIA, NCIS, NYPD, CFD. Diseases have been reduced from the terrifying medical terms to short and sweet IBS, COPD, D1 and D2 for example. Cutie pie newbies like POTUS and FLOTUS, refer to our President and First Lady. News outlets CNN, HLN, FBN to name a few. Then there’s NBC, CBS, NBC, FX for tuning in. Businesses like the Government Employees Insurance Company is now only known as GEICO. Typing whole words is a lost art. To type a whole message out, well that’s so 5 years ago. You is U, Are is R, I is I; well, okay (or K for us who are down with the lingo) that’s still the same. When I was still working in an office for a large company we had websites dedicated just to acronyms and what they meant. They were always adding to it. Thank goodness for the cheatsheets. There were always the times when trying to find the right definition while on the line with another party, and I’d eventually just stand up and call over the cubicle to my co-worker, “What does ______ mean?” Don’t even get me started on Sexting. ? Sexting? What the heck is that?!? Or WTHIT?!? We can’t just call something by its whole name anymore that would be ludicrous, right, JLo?
Added to our new writing language we now use tiny pictures and icons to convey our messages and feelings. A picture is worth a thousand words. Well at least a few words anyway. There are hundreds to choose from. We need an interpreter for our interpreter. Not only do we have to learn our regional language, but we have to remember the definition for every abbreviation and figure out what someone is trying to convey by an itty bitty picture. ? Must be somebody’s birthday.
Receiving a text message from a friend likely will be comprised of some of the literally endless combinations of disconnected letters, abbreviations, then ending in one of these popular letter combos: LY, LYL, LOL, LMAO, TY immediately followed by a diminutive cartoon or two. ?
There should be a disclaimer on all texting and social media sites. Our language is now being brought to you in code. LOL… Sandy ?
